The Blacklist

Inspired by historical and highly politicized Black artists and the unjust, forced social and professional silencing of their careers, Maleek Washington's The Blacklist is a mystery collaboration of working Black artists who reclaim the blacklist to be a haven for desirable and politicized collective production. The immersive performance work is conceptually driven by Washington and actualized by artists Alexeya, ColemanCollective, Chet Gold, Matthew Perez, Antonio Brown, and Emma Pfaeffle. These artists are blindly paired to perform works that function as a thought-provoking dialogue across a fusion of artistic disciplines.

The night concludes with a set by rapper Kamau.

LET'S. MOVE. NOW

A BENEFIT DANCE CONCERT by MOVE(NYC)

The goal of LET'S. MOVE. NOW. is to create a platform that connects working, relevant artists at every stage of their respective careers. The artists chosen for LET'S. MOVE. NOW. will always represent a wide spectrum of the artistic community, from emerging to the very well established, men and women, as well as people of many different ethnicities and cultural or national backgrounds. It is the job of art to be a true reflection of life, and in order to better achieve that, MOVE(NYC) is committed to creating as many opportunities as possible to present artists with varying perspectives and artistic voices.

ColemanCollective’s “Victoria”, demonstrates the forever growing capacity of a healthy and encouraged woman. The work touches on the sexualization of the athletic female body, as well as the idolization of female deities. In this piece, choreographer’s Matthew Perez and Cain A. Coleman Jr., honor the commonly unappreciated strength of woman and the passing down of a self confident female culture. ”Victoria” is dedicated to Cherie Chiles and Ana Perez, the mothers of Cain and Matthew

Gibney Dance Company-Curated Performance

ColemanCollective, MADBOOTS, and Manuel Vignoulle

Curated by Gibney Dance Company

This Gibney Dance Company curated performance is an outlet for diverse choreographers who share the values of the Company’s unique model, viewing dance artists as innovators, generators, and activists. We will be presenting 'Retrograde: The American story through the eyes of…'. This work reveals several perspectives on cultural appropriation, and is filled with emotionally opaque images along with ironic commentary on the effect that slavery, segregation, and general racism have had on the Black American narrative. It describes the correlation between past and future, and hopes to inspire audiences to expand on the conversation and research of culture/ancestry, to learn from history and make it relevant for personal as well as social change.

15th Annual Richmond Choreographer’s Showcase

For 15 years the Richmond Annual Choreographers Showcase has been bringing established and emerging choreographers to Richmond, Virginia and has continually been the only dance festival on the east coast that provides support for new works by dance artists. Through an adjudication process, the choreographers are selected for the Showcase with the ultimate goal of providing three performances of eclectic and engaging dance works in one weekend.

Produced by Starr Foster Dance Project, admission to the Showcase is set at the low cost of $10 to encourage the general public to come out, experience and support the performing arts. It is our goal to recognize and promote other dance companies and expose them to the flourishing dance scene in Richmond.

Feedback facilitated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa

Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) pairs up in a new and exciting partnership with Movement Research for its first Dance Block Salon of 2017! This salon will be facilitated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa in a generous extension of her Response series.

Response is a series focused on fostering a culture of support and care in our artist community by offering artists informal settings to show work and give feedback. With this Dance Block Salon we amplify that culture by teaming up with fellow arts organization Movement Research and inviting artists from our respective communities to show work.

Incriminate the Itimate

Jerome AB & Gina Chiappetta are co-curating this month’s Dance Art Video Screening

 “Incriminate the Intimate."

The focus of this screening pertains to themes Jerome & Gina explore as collaborators — blurring dichotomies of tenderness & aggression, care & violence, sentiment & apathy, private & public. This screening serves to expand this dialogue — unveiling vulnerable crevices that lay between so-called polarities.

This festival will feature ColemanCollective's "REACT/Reaction"
